Kitkat—as she was fondly called by one of our bosses back in the day—Olayikitan Oyesiku’s mortal body is returning to dust, fulfilling God’s decree to all mortals: “In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.” — Genesis 3:19.
Olayikitan was brutally murdered by an ingrate who had once benefited from her generosity as an employee.
True to her name, Olayikitan, her wealth never ceased. Kitan was a prosperous benefactor to many. She stood in the gap for both the living and the dead. A cheerful yet quiet giver, she was a master planner and a perfectionist who never tired of offering her exceptional coordinating skills whenever the need arose.
I recall her roles in several joint Grade A productions. I remember her commitment to ensuring that departed colleagues received befitting burials. I remember her compassion in providing succour to those in distress. I remember her thoroughness, resilience, and relentless pursuit of excellence. I also remember her unwavering determination to mentor younger colleagues.
Kitan was always available to honour both serving and retired members of staff with her presence and generous support at important events.
In Kitan flowed an endless stream of kindness to serving and retired staff of Ogun State Television.
A brilliant broadcaster with impeccable Queen’s English and an accomplished presentation expert, Kitan Oyesiku served Ogun State with distinction. She contributed immensely to the state’s development through her outstanding and well-researched productions.
Through Kitan, many women from diverse backgrounds were brought into the limelight. She was the brain behind the popular and inspiring television programme, Prime Woman, which aired on OGTV for many years.
Kitan and I were classmates in the Department of Mass Communication at the University of Lagos. We also grew professionally together at Ogun State Television. She was one of the dedicated staff members who made OGTV flourish in those memorable years.
Kitan, your painful departure has deprived countless beneficiaries of your generosity. Your brutal killing has also brought to an abrupt end the daily inspirational messages you faithfully shared with hundreds of people, including myself.
How I wish I had the power to bring your assailant and his accomplices to your interment in handcuffs, just so they could witness the outpouring of love and honour being showered on you, even in death.
Indeed, Kitan, your life was cut short. Your friends, colleagues, church members, and family are still struggling to come to terms with your painful departure.
Olayikitan Ibilola Oyesiku, my dear sister, I deeply miss your warm greetings and the affectionate way you would draw close to embrace me while saying, “My brother.”
As your remains are committed to mother earth this Friday, I join countless others in saying: Good night, my sister. Good night, Mama K. Good night, Kitkat.
