WHAT HAPPENED TO CYRIL STOBER?

Born in Minna, Niger State, Stober never originally imagined that broadcasting would become his life’s calling. He had hoped to become an engineer. Fate, however, had other plans.

His journey into broadcasting began modestly through a church programme recorded and played back on NBC Radio Kaduna.

From that small beginning came a career that would eventually place his voice in millions of Nigerian homes.

He began his broadcasting career with NTA Minna, before rising through the ranks and eventually becoming one of the most recognisable faces of NTA Network News.

For decades, his measured delivery, immaculate native attire, glasses and unmistakable voice became part of the visual and auditory architecture of Nigerian television.

He was not alone.

He belonged to a remarkable generation of broadcasters, people such as Eugenia Abu, Ruth Benemaisia-Opia, Frank Olize, Sienne Allwell-Brown and others, whose voices became woven into the memories of millions.

He interviewed prominent Nigerians and international figures, anchored major programmes and became particularly associated with the flagship News at 9 and Tuesday Live.

Then, gradually, the familiar face disappeared from our screens.

Stober retired from NTA in 2015, although retirement did not immediately mean disappearance. He continued working with the organisation on a contract basis.

His final departure from the station came in 2019.

But retirement did not end his story.

In 2023, Stober was ordained a Knight of the Methodist Church, Nigeria.

In 2025, Cyril Stober was still appearing publicly as a veteran media professional, including as a resource person at the National Defence College in Abuja.

So, what happened to Cyril Stober?

Nothing tragic.

He simply grew older, retired, and stepped away from the nightly ritual that made his face familiar to generations of Nigerians.
