Transport operators and unions in Ogun State have declared their support for the governorship aspiration of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The declaration was made at a Grand Convergence of Road Transport Associations and Unions in Ogun State, where transport stakeholders gathered to discuss the future of the sector and the state under the theme, “Consolidation of Proven Capacity and Competence.”
Speaking at the event, the Co-host, Alhaji Amb. Adebayo Samsudeen Apelogun, described the gathering as a defining moment for the transport sector, saying transport workers must recognise their political strength and responsibility as major stakeholders in the state’s economy.
Apelogun said good roads remained critical to transportation and economic development, stressing that effective road networks connect farmers to markets, facilitate the movement of petroleum products and promote business, investment and employment.
He urged transporters to remain united and peaceful, irrespective of the association or mode of transportation they operate, saying their challenges and future were interconnected.
The Co-host also urged members of the various transport unions to exercise their franchise responsibly in 2027 by examining the records, experience, capacity and programmes of political aspirants before making their choice.
While acknowledging the contributions of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the federal level and the developmental projects of the immediate past Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, Apelogun said the gathering had principally been convened to consider the aspiration and record of Senator Yayi.
He highlighted what he described as Yayi’s interventions in road infrastructure, education, healthcare, youth and women empowerment, electricity, water, community development and legislative representation.
According to him, Yayi’s record in the Senate, including his role as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, provides a basis for assessing his capacity and competence ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
Apelogun said the transporters had examined Yayi’s record and were convinced of his capacity to lead Ogun State, declaring that the entire transport sector in the state was behind his aspiration.
He said, “When transporters speak, we speak with one voice,” adding that the voice of the transport sector was now firmly behind Yayi.
The gathering ended with a call on transport workers to return to their communities, educate voters and participate peacefully in the democratic process.
