Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has advised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Ogun State, Ladi Adebutu, to ensure that his political ambition is guided by God’s purpose, while offering him his fatherly blessings ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

Obasanjo gave the advice on Monday when he hosted Adebutu, the PDP’s Ogun Central Senatorial candidate, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, and other party leaders during a private meeting at his penthouse inside the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta.

The closed-door meeting focused on the future of Ogun State, leadership, and the need to promote good governance for the benefit of the people.

Speaking during the meeting, the former President reiterated that he had stepped away from partisan politics but remained committed to the welfare, progress, and prosperity of Nigerians. He noted that although political interests may differ, the wellbeing of the people must always come first.

Obasanjo encouraged Adebutu to pursue his aspiration with humility and wisdom, reminding him that lasting success comes when personal ambitions align with God’s divine plan.

He also expressed concern over Nigeria’s inability to maximise its abundant natural and human resources, stressing that leaders and elders have a responsibility to provide direction and ensure that the nation’s wealth is used to improve the lives of its citizens.

According to him, his upbringing as a village man has continued to shape his values and commitment to service.

Addressing journalists after the meeting, Adebutu described Obasanjo as a father figure, mentor, and elder statesman whose guidance remains invaluable. He said the visit was aimed at seeking the former President’s blessings and sharing his vision for a better-governed Ogun State.

Adebutu added that receiving Obasanjo’s counsel and encouragement has strengthened his resolve to continue working towards providing purposeful leadership and improved governance for the people of Ogun State.
