ABEOKUTA — Former Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has mourned the death of former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, describing his passing as a great loss to Nigeria.
Tukur, a respected elder statesman, businessman and former public servant, died on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at the age of 90, barely three days to his 91st birthday.
In a condolence statement, Amosun described the late Tukur as one of Nigeria’s finest citizens, noting that his life was marked by remarkable contributions to public service, politics, governance, business and national development.
The former governor recalled Tukur’s appointment in 1975 as General Manager/Chief Executive of the Nigerian Ports Authority, where he contributed to the development of Nigeria’s maritime sector. He also highlighted his roles in the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) and the African Business Roundtable (ABR), where he contributed to efforts aimed at promoting African economic cooperation and private-sector development.
Amosun also acknowledged Tukur’s contributions to Nigeria’s political development, including his tenure as Governor of the old Gongola State in 1983, Minister of Industry between 1993 and 1995, and National Chairman of the PDP from 2012 to 2014.
The former governor described the late politician’s decades of service to Adamawa State, Nigeria and the African continent as significant, adding that his national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) and the traditional title of Tafidan Adamawa reflected his contributions to the country and his community.
Amosun extended his condolences to the Tukur family, the government and people of Adamawa State, as well as his political and business associates, friends and other Nigerians mourning the elder statesman.
He prayed to Almighty Allah to grant the deceased Aljannah Firdaus and give his children, grandchildren, political associates and the entire Tukur family the strength to bear the loss.
