ASUP DEMANDS IMMEDIATE CATA/EAA IMPLEMENTATION, SEEKS ₦100M MONTHLY SUBVENTION FOR OGUN POLYTECHNICS

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Ogun State Polytechnics, has demanded the immediate implementation of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), while calling on the Ogun State Government to increase the monthly subvention to state-owned polytechnics from ₦5 million to ₦100 million.

The union also raised concerns over outstanding pension counterpart funding, unremitted employees’ pension deductions and unpaid government palliatives to workers in some of the state-owned institutions.

The demands were made during a press conference held at the ASUP Building, Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Ojere, Abeokuta.

The conference addressed by Comrade Adeyemi Joseph Kolawole of the Ogun State Polytechnic of Health and Allied Sciences, Ilese-Ijebu said the 15-day ultimatum issued by its National Leadership over the non-implementation of CATA/EAA had entered its final six days, warning that failure to address the issues could trigger an industrial crisis in the polytechnic sector.

The ultimatum, which commenced on October 27, followed a resolution of the union’s 118th National Executive Council meeting held in Abuja on October 22, 2026.

ASUP said previous appeals to the state government through letters dated August 5 and September 21 had yet to produce any satisfactory commitment towards implementing the allowances in line with the 2026 FGN/ASUP Agreement.

The union described the ₦5 million monthly subvention reportedly received by some institutions for over a decade as grossly inadequate, considering prevailing economic realities, rising operational costs and the responsibilities of tertiary institutions.

It argued that the continued neglect of the polytechnic sector could undermine the educational aspirations of thousands of young people, particularly as Ogun State has only one state-owned university.

ASUP consequently urged Governor Dapo Abiodun to personally intervene, review the funding structure of the institutions, clear outstanding pension obligations and ensure that eligible workers receive their outstanding palliative payments.

While expressing readiness for constructive engagement and peaceful resolution of the dispute, the union maintained that dialogue must be backed by concrete action.

It warned that the welfare of academic staff, sustainability of the institutions and academic future of students must not be treated with indifference, urging the government to utilise the remaining six days to avert possible industrial action.

Other ASUP officials and representatives present at the press conference included:

  1. Comrade Okunubi Samuel Adetunji – Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic, Ijebu-Igbo.
