The Ogun State Government has suspended the Eselu of Iselu Kingdom in Yewa North Local Government Area, Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, over alleged partisan political activities considered capable of undermining the traditional institution and threatening peaceful coexistence.

The suspension, which takes immediate effect, was approved by the State Executive Council in line with Section 52(1) of the Ogun State Obas and Chiefs Law, 2021, pending a detailed investigation into the allegations against the monarch.

The decision was conveyed in a letter dated October 20, 2026, signed by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyu Hamzat.

The government said the action followed several complaints about the monarch’s conduct, particularly his alleged involvement in overtly partisan political activities, some of which were reportedly publicised by him.

According to the government, partisan political activities by traditional rulers are contrary to customary law and prohibited by statute, with the potential to compromise the dignity of the traditional institution and create divisions among subjects with different political affiliations.

As part of the suspension, Oba Akinyemi has been directed to vacate the palace and stay away from the premises throughout the period. He has also been prohibited from presenting himself as the Eselu of Iselu Kingdom or wearing or using any crown, ileke, beaded staff, irukere or other traditional paraphernalia associated with the office.

The monarch is also required to make himself available for any meeting or sitting convened by the state government as part of the investigation.

The government said the suspension was intended to preserve peace, order and good governance in Iselu Kingdom and Ogun State while the allegations are being examined. Copies of the letter were sent to the Secretary of Yewa North Local Government and the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, for information and necessary action.
