The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State has condemned what it described as widespread violence during Saturday’s Federal Constituency Bye-election in Sagamu, Remo North, and Ikenne. In a strongly worded statement, the opposition party decried incidents of gunfire, voter harassment, and intimidation of electoral officials, describing the situation as “a direct assault on the democratic rights of our people.”
According to the PDP, security operatives, instead of arresting perpetrators of the violence, allegedly turned their attention to opposition members. The party said its chairman was arrested in his hotel at dawn, accusing the Nigerian Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) of colluding with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to subvert the people’s will. It added that the failure of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration to contain the violence amounted to complicity.
The PDP demanded the immediate release of its chairman and other detained members, while calling for an independent probe into the role of security agencies in the unrest. The party also urged civil society groups, Nigerians, and the international community to hold the government accountable. “Enough is enough—this reign of terror must end, and those responsible must face the full weight of the law,” the statement, signed by Otunba Arc Kayode Adebayo, declared.
