Former Governor of Ogun State and Senator who represented Ogun Central, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Owolabi Olakunlehin, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, who joined his ancestors in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025.
In a heartfelt condolence message issued by his media aide, Lanre Akinwale, Senator Amosun commiserated with the Olakunlehin royal family, the Ibadan Traditional Institution, the government of Oyo State, and the entire people of Ibadanland over what he described as “a monumental loss.”
Describing Oba Olakunlehin’s passing as sudden and deeply painful, Amosun noted that the loss was made even more poignant by the fact that it occurred barely two days after the monarch marked his 90th birthday and the first anniversary of his coronation as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland on Saturday, July 5.
“Oba Olakunlehin was a monarch of grace, wisdom, and humility. In just one year on the throne, he etched his name in the hearts of his people through his steadfast advocacy for peace, unity, and purposeful leadership. He will be remembered not just as a royal father, but as a servant-leader who always put his people first,” Amosun stated.
The late Olubadan, a revered figure in Oyo State and beyond, had a rich and diverse legacy. Before ascending the throne, he served as a teacher, a military officer, and a politician. Notably, he represented Ibadan South East Constituency in the House of Representatives in 1992, earning widespread respect for his dedication to national development and public service.
Senator Amosun prayed for the peaceful repose of the monarch’s soul and asked that Almighty God grant the bereaved family, the Ibadan Traditional Council, and the people of Ibadanland the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
“The demise of Oba Olakunlehin is not only a loss to Ibadanland, but to the entire Yoruba race and Nigeria at large. May his soul find eternal rest,” he added.
Oba Olakunlehin is survived by his children, grandchildren, and a city that will remember him for his unwavering commitment to tradition, community development, and unity.
