The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has commended the Bauchi State Government, led by Governor Muhammed Bala, for approving and releasing over N400 million for the comprehensive renovation and upgrading of the NUJ Secretariat in the state.
The commendation was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the NUJ NEC meeting held in Dutse, Jigawa State, on August 11, 2026.
NEC described the gesture as a significant demonstration of the Bauchi State Government’s support for journalism and the welfare of journalists, noting that improved facilities would provide a more conducive working environment for media practitioners.
The Council urged other state governments across the country to emulate the initiative by investing in media infrastructure and providing conducive working environments for journalists.
The NEC meeting, chaired by the National President of the NUJ, Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, also deliberated on issues bordering on the safety and welfare of journalists, national security, professional development, institutional strengthening, agriculture, strategic partnerships and the unity of the Union.
NEC further commended the Jigawa State Government for its commitment to mechanised agriculture, urging other state governments to adopt similar initiatives aimed at boosting food production, creating employment and improving citizens’ livelihoods.
The Council also reaffirmed its commitment to responsible reporting of terrorism and insecurity, urging journalists and media organisations to avoid sensationalism and the glorification of terrorists, bandits and other criminal elements.
On professional unity, NEC resolved to formally reabsorb and reintegrate the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) into the NUJ family, recognising the current leadership of SWAN under Comrade Isaiah Benjamin in accordance with the relevant provisions and procedures of the Union.
The Council also approved a proposed partnership with a reputable law firm to provide legal representation and advisory services to the Union and its members, while expressing appreciation to UN Women for its continued support, particularly in capacity building for women journalists.
NEC also approved the suspension of five members for alleged anti-Union activities—two from Cross River State Council and three from Kwara State Council—while urging members to abide by the NUJ Constitution and utilise established internal mechanisms for resolving disputes.
The Council expressed appreciation to the Jigawa State Government and the NUJ Jigawa State Council for their support, hospitality and cooperation in hosting the NEC meeting.
NEC reaffirmed its determination to build a stronger, united and professionally responsive NUJ capable of protecting the interests of journalists, promoting ethical journalism and contributing meaningfully to national development.
