The Private School Tutors Union of Nigeria (PRISCTUN) has condemned the abduction of school children, teachers and a principal, describing the incident as a direct attack on education and the future of the nation.
In a statement issued on behalf of its members, the union expressed deep concern over the rising wave of insecurity affecting schools across the country.
PRISCTUN said it stands in solidarity with the abducted victims, their families, parents and the entire school community during the difficult period.
The union stressed that every child has the right to learn in a safe and secure environment, free from fear, intimidation and violence. It warned that repeated attacks on schools could discourage enrolment, disrupt academic activities and negatively affect efforts aimed at improving the nation’s education sector.
PRISCTUN lamented that schools, which should serve as centres of learning and character development, are increasingly becoming targets of criminal elements. The union noted that the growing insecurity poses a serious threat to the welfare of both learners and educators across the country.
The union therefore called on the Federal and State Governments, as well as security agencies, to take urgent and decisive steps to protect schools and educational personnel. It emphasized that classrooms must never be turned into battlefields and demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the abducted students, teachers and principal.
PRISCTUN also urged all stakeholders to work together in tackling the security challenges confronting the education sector while reaffirming its commitment to the safety, welfare and dignity of teachers and learners nationwide.
