TASUED KILLING; NANS CALL ON FEDERAL GOVT. TO BEEF UP SECURITY ARROUND CAMPUSES

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on the federal government to with immediate provide enough security around campuses in Nigeria to put a quick end to the alarming security situation on campuses exemplified by the recent tragic incident at Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijebu Ode in Ogun State.

The Clerk of the Senate of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Senator Comrade Oladimeji Uthman stated this at a press conference organized to address the recent killing

‘’The brutal attack and subsequent death of Fabiyi Hammed Ayinla, a 400-level student of History and Diplomatic Studies, serves as a grim reminder of the grave threats posed by cultism and related criminal activities within our educational institutions. This incident occurred despite there are internal security personnel’s on campus, highlighting vulnerabilities that require immediate redress.’’

‘’It is disheartening that such heinous acts continue to endanger the lives of our students who are in pursuit of knowledge and personal growth. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time.’’

‘’In light of this tragic event, the senate secretariat at her just concluded emergency meeting called upon federal and state governments, as well as all managements of both public and private owned institutions, to prioritize and enhance security measures and architecture on various campuses.’’

NANS at the press conference made some demands from the Federal Government to include, Increased Surveillance and Patrols: Implementing regular patrols and surveillance around campuses, especially during vulnerable periods such as exam periods and students week celebrations.

Strengthening Security Personnel’s: Ensuring internal security personnel are well-trained, adequately equipped, and strategically positioned to respond swiftly to incidents.

Collaboration with Law Enforcement Agencies: Establishing effective collaboration between campus security units and law enforcement agencies to improve response capabilities and intelligence sharing.

Promoting Awareness and Prevention: Educating students and staff about the dangers of cultism and other criminal activities, fostering a culture of reporting suspicious behaviors, and promoting peaceful coexistence on our campuses.

Crisis Response Protocols: Developing and regularly updating crisis response protocols to ensure effective coordination and communication in emergency situations.

‘’NANS also affirmed that the safety and well-being of all Nigerian students both at home and in Diaspora remain paramount to them as a leadership, and it is incumbent upon all stakeholders to take proactive measures to ensure campuses in Nigeria are secured.’’

‘’NANS stands ready to collaborate with government authorities, security agencies, educational institutions, and relevant stakeholders towards achieving safer learning environments for our teeming members.’’
