Former Senate President Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki has condemned incumbent Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s assertion that calls for a transparent investigation into allegations made against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan are politically motivated efforts to remove a Niger Delta representative from office.
In a statement from his media office in Abuja, Saraki characterized Akpabio’s comments as “cheap politics” and a “trivialization of a serious issue.” He urged the Senate President to carefully review his previous statements, emphasizing that he had never suggested Akpabio’s resignation but rather called for an open inquiry to uphold the integrity of the Senate.
Saraki highlighted that Akpabio’s attempts to frame the situation as an ethnic vendetta distract from the critical need for an unbiased examination of the serious allegations regarding sexual harassment and abuse of office. He insisted that regardless of political affiliation or regional background, the Senate’s credibility is paramount, and any investigation must adhere to established constitutional and legislative guidelines.
The former Senate President expressed concern that politicizing such serious issues could undermine the integrity of the legislative institution. He reiterated his commitment to advocating for transparency and due process, asserting that his suggestions aim to strengthen the Senate, not to diminish it.
