PROF. WOLE SOYINKA; OGUN NUJ CELEBRATES LITERARY ICON, FREEDOM FIGHTER AT 90

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ogun State Council has celebrated the true Nigerian Icon and a tireless advocate of press freedom Professor Wole Soyinka who clocks 90 years today

In a statement jointly signed by the Chairman and Secretary of the council, Comrade Wale Olanrewaju and Comrade Bunmi Adigun described the literary icon as a quintessential leader, a freedom fighter, a literary giant and a tireless advocate for justice and human rights, whose contributions to Nigeria and the educational sector remain immeasurable, and his impact on generations of students, scholars, and activists undeniable.

‘The statement reads further, ‘’As a Nobel Laureate, Professor Soyinka has brought honor and pride to Nigeria, and his commitment to the pursuit of excellence and truth has inspired countless individuals to strive for greatness.

‘’We salute Professor Soyinka’s resilience in his fight for press freedom, untiring struggle for Freedom of Information, remarkable legacy in the advocacy for human rights and unwavering dedication to the advancement of knowledge as well as his unshakeable commitment to the values of justice, equality, and freedom at all levels’’.

‘’Undoubtedly, his influence has helped shape the educational sector in Nigeria, and his legacy continues to inspire and motivate educators, researchers, and students’’.

‘’Kongi’s literary pieces, which include plays, poems, essays and novels, have been a cornerstone of Nigeria’s educational curriculum, shaping the minds and intellect of countless individuals while his writing has also been a powerful tool for social commentary, critique, and reform, inspiring critical thinking and intellectual curiosity’’.

The council also wishes Prof Akinwande Oluwole Soyinka many more years of wisdom, wit, and inspiration from this extraordinary individual!
