The governments of Ogun, Osun, and Lagos States have declared Wednesday, August 20, 2025, as a public holiday to commemorate Isese Day, the annual celebration of Yoruba cultural heritage and traditional religion.
The Isese Day holiday, now recognized across several southwestern states, is dedicated to honouring the rich traditions, beliefs, and values of the Yoruba people. It provides adherents of the traditional religion the opportunity to celebrate their faith, preserve ancestral practices, and promote unity through cultural expressions.
In separate announcements, the three states urged residents to use the holiday to reflect on the virtues of peace, harmony, and mutual respect, which remain central to Yoruba tradition. Government officials emphasized that the recognition of Isese Day underscores the importance of inclusivity and religious freedom in Nigeria’s multi-faith society.
Festivities are expected across major towns and cities, with traditional worshippers, cultural troupes, and community leaders set to host colourful events in honour of the day. Security agencies have also assured citizens of safety during the celebrations.
