Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has lauded Professor Chinedum Peace Babalola, the outgoing Vice-Chancellor of Chrisland University, for her exemplary leadership and dedication to advancing higher education in Nigeria.
Obasanjo, speaking at a valedictory service held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, emphasized that Babalola’s tenure has elevated the institution’s standards, transforming it into one of the country’s top universities.
Reflecting on Babalola’s seven years of service, Obasanjo commended her as a “woman of virtue” whose commitment and integrity have left a lasting legacy at Chrisland University.
He highlighted the importance of her contributions not only to the institution but to Nigerian education as a whole, noting that her leadership has set a benchmark for future academic leaders.
In his address, Obasanjo also underscored the need to integrate African cultural values into Nigeria’s democratic framework, advocating for a shift from Western liberal democracy to a more communal, collaborative approach that resonates with African ideals. He argued that African culture, which emphasizes unity and collective problem-solving, aligns more closely with the values necessary to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Chrisland University, Prof. Olatunde Farombi, echoed Obasanjo’s sentiments, recognizing Babalola’s achievements in enhancing the university’s reputation and academic quality.
Expressing her gratitude, Babalola thanked the founder of Chrisland University, Dr. Winifred Awosika, for her unwavering support. She assured the university community that she would remain available to offer her expertise and wished for the institution’s continued growth and success.
