Kano, Nigeria – August 12, 2025: The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on the Federal and State Governments to take urgent steps to tackle worsening insecurity, rehabilitate decaying infrastructure, and improve the welfare of journalists across the country.
In a communiqué issued at the end of its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Kano on Tuesday, the Union expressed concern over escalating violence in states such as Benue, Zamfara, and Plateau, warning that rising cases of banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism threaten national unity.
The meeting, presided over by NUJ National President Comrade Alhasan Yahya, also lamented the “death trap” condition of roads in several states, including Delta, Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba, Benue, Rivers, Enugu, and Kogi, urging immediate rehabilitation of critical routes.
On media relations, the NEC criticised the conduct of some Chief Press Secretaries (CPS) to governors, accusing them of hostility towards journalists and obstructing NUJ leaders from engaging with state executives. The Union reminded CPS officials that their role is to facilitate, not hinder, communication between government and the press.
The NEC passed a vote of confidence on the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, for what it described as progressive leadership and support for press freedom. Commendations also went to Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for settling outstanding entitlements of former New Nigeria Newspapers staff, and to Akwa Ibom State Governor Pastor Umo Eno for donating SUVs to members of the NUJ State Working Committee.
The Union reaffirmed its support for its national leadership under Comrade Yahya, called for the full implementation of the ₦70,000 minimum wage in media organisations, and urged governments to desist from censoring the press.
The NEC further appealed for proactive measures to prevent flooding, including improved early warning systems, clearing of drainage channels, and relocation of residents from high-risk areas.
Reaffirming its commitment to press freedom and democratic values, the NUJ urged all tiers of government to work with the media in promoting transparency, accountability, and national development.
