Former Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has thrown his weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid, framing the move as a necessity for national stability and regional equity.
Speaking to reporters in Abeokuta during his 68th birthday celebrations, the APC chieftain dismissed any ambiguity regarding the next election cycle. He argued that Nigeria’s informal yet vital rotational presidency mandate dictates that the South must complete a full eight-year term.
The Argument for Equity
Amosun emphasized that honoring the power-sharing agreement between the North and South is non-negotiable for anyone committed to a unified Nigeria.
“In the interest of Nigeria, we must observe rotation,” Amosun stated. “The last president from the North, Muhammadu Buhari, served eight years. It is now the South’s turn.”
He further clarified his stance, labeling the support for Tinubu’s second term as a “no-brainer” based on the precedent set by previous administrations.
According to Amosun, while Tinubu represents the entire nation, he stands as the current standard-bearer for the South-West and the Southern region at large.
Economic Reforms and “Renewed Hope”
Beyond the politics of zoning, Amosun addressed the current economic climate. He acknowledged the “early hardship” sparked by the administration’s aggressive reforms but remained optimistic. He urged Nigerians to maintain their patience, asserting that the Renewed Hope agenda is already showing signs of progress and will eventually deliver the promised democratic dividends.

The declaration was made before a high-profile audience of political and financial leaders, signaling a consolidated front within the APC.
