The National Clerk of the Senate NANS Headquarters, Senator Comrade Oladimeji Uthman, has informed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), that the students body is ready to partner with the commission in the fight against cybercrime, corruption and sextortion .
At a visit to the Lagos Zonal Command on Thursday in Lagos, Uthman said NANS is ready to partner with the anti-graft agency in tackling social vices across the country.
He said: “As a responsive and progressive students body we are ready to partner with the commission to fight financial crimes and reduce it to the barest minimum.
He expressed willingness of his group to collaborate with the EFCC in reorientating and sensitizing students at all levels on the ills of corruption, internet and financial crimes. “We propose to organise joint awareness campaigns to educate students about the dangers of financial crimes”, he said. He further added that “we seek to collaborate on capacity building initiatives to enhance students’ understanding of financial literacy, integrity and ethics.”
The Lagos Zonal commander, Mr. Michael T. Wetkas, urged the students leaders to see themselves as important stakeholders in the fight against economic and financial crimes. “As students leaders, you are expected to be role models in integrity, conduct, character, and accountability”, he said.
He also informed the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, that the commission is willingly ready to collaborate with the national students body in the fight against economic and financial crimes while encouraging its members to be whistleblowers..
He said: “The strength of any nation lies in its youths and educational level. The country needs a generation of progressive individuals who will maximize their talents.”
He charged the students leaders to continually reorientate and sensitize their members across campuses from indulging in cyber crimes, maintaining that there is no virtue in get-rich-quick syndrome driving many Nigerian youths into the crimes. “There is no shortcut to wealth and success. Internet fraud diminishes our image as a nation. The anti-graft agency will continue to discharge its responsibilities within the ambit of the law, without fear or favour in this regard” he said.
