The Ogun State government has hailed journalism as a cornerstone of accountability and transparency in governance across all sectors of society.

This assertion was made by Dr. Toyin Taiwo, Chief of Staff to Governor Dapo Abiodun, during the presentation of the “Pillar of Good Governance” award by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun Council, on Thursday in Abeokuta.

Represented by Mr. Wasiu Isiaka, the Commissioner for Sports, Taiwo emphasized the media’s crucial role in informing the public, scrutinizing leadership, and shaping national discourse.

He remarked that it is through the media’s courage and commitment to truth that public trust is cultivated and maintained.

“Journalism serves as the watchdog of democracy, holding power accountable and exposing hidden truths without fear or favor,” he stated.

He further urged journalists to uphold the highest standards of objectivity, impartiality, and investigative integrity, asserting, “Here in Ogun State, we take pride in our rich heritage of journalistic excellence. We are the birthplace of media legends like Chief Olusegun Osoba and the late Alhaji Lateef Jakande.”

Taiwo stressed the importance of journalists remaining loyal to the truth, stating, “In an age of misinformation and political polarization, the profession must divest itself of partisanship and recommit to the core values of ethical reporting.”

He assured that the Ogun State government would continue to strive for excellence in governance, development, and democratic leadership.

In a goodwill message, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, the State Head of Service, reiterated the media’s vital role in governance, emphasizing its responsibility to inform, educate, and shape public discourse.

Earlier, Mr. Wale Olanrewaju, NUJ Chairman, highlighted the importance of recognizing the achievements of Dr. Taiwo and the collective efforts of all those dedicated to improving Ogun State.
