The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Commission (NDIC) says it will begin payment to 2.3 million depositors of the Heritage Bank as soon as possible.

The Managing Director of NDIC, Mr. Bello Hassan, made this statement during a press briefing recently

Hassan reported that the bank initially held deposits totaling N650 billion and loans amounting to N700 billion.

He noted that 99.9% of the depositors from the defunct bank had balances of less than N5 million, whereas only 4,000 depositors had balances exceeding N5 million.

There are about 116 branches of heritage banks across the country according to Mr. Bello Hassan.

Meanwhile account name discrepancies in Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) linked to the alternate accounts of some defunct Heritage Bank customers are delaying the payment of their insured deposits.

Hassan said the corporation had paid a substantial amount to depositors of the defunct bank without BVN account-linked issues.

He called on depositors of the bank who were yet to receive their insured deposit credit alert to visit the NDIC’s website and complete their verification forms for their payment.

The managing director said the verification would also include depositors without BVN alternate account.
