Thirteen years after the loss of Rashidi Yekini, Nigeria’s all-time leading goalscorer, Gateway United Football Club joined fans and family in honoring the legendary striker’s enduring legacy.
Yekini, who passed away on May 4, 2012, remains a symbol of excellence and inspiration for young footballers across Nigeria.
Acting General Manager Niyi Soleye reflected on Yekini’s impactful yet brief tenure at Gateway United in 2005, recalling fond memories and the striker’s significant contribution to the club. “Yekini was not only a prolific goalscorer but also a gentleman, admired by teammates and respected by opponents. His record of 37 goals for the Super Eagles remains unmatched—a true testament to his talent and dedication,” Soleye stated.
Soleye vividly remembered the day Yekini joined the club. “His arrival was a turning point for Gateway United. As club secretary at the time, it was a privilege to welcome a player of his caliber. He lifted the spirits of both players and fans with his inspirational presence.”
Yekini’s career flourished both in Nigeria, with clubs like Shooting Stars and Abiola Babes, and on the European stage, where he showcased his explosive style and instinctive goal-scoring ability. He made a significant mark at Gateway United, netting seven goals in 26 appearances alongside former national teammates Sani Abacha and Jude Edemba.
Despite his tragic passing at the age of 48, Yekini’s legacy remains firmly rooted in Nigerian football history. He was laid to rest at his family compound in Ira, Kwara State, but his influence continues to resonate within the football community.
