Gateway United Football Club is mourning the untimely passing of its former captain, Chiemeka Onyii, who tragically lost his life in a building collapse in Ojodu, Lagos.
Onyii, a central defender renowned for his leadership skills, captained the Ogun State-owned club from 2007 to 2009.
The Delta State-born athlete was not only celebrated for his prowess on the field but also for his dedication off it.
Until his death, he operated a football academy in Lagos, where he played a pivotal role in nurturing young talents and advancing grassroots football.
In his tribute, Gateway United’s Acting General Manager, Mr. Niyi Soleye, expressed heartfelt condolences, describing Onyii as an exemplary professional whose passion for football was unmatched.
“This is a devastating loss, not just for Gateway United, but for the entire football community,” Soleye remarked. “Chiemeka Onyii was more than just a former captain; he embodied resilience, leadership, and commitment.
His contributions to our club and to youth football through his academy will remain etched in our hearts. We extend our thoughts and prayers to his family, friends, and all those affected by this tragedy.”
Soleye also stated that the club intends to honor Onyii’s legacy in a meaningful way in the coming days.
Chiemeka Onyii is survived by his family and numerous protégés, all of whom he inspired and mentored through his passion for the beautiful game.
