The 39th annual Lisabi Festival has officially transitioned from a local tradition into a global cultural powerhouse with the unveiling of the Egbaliganza 2026 program.
At a high-profile press conference held in Abeokuta on Tuesday, organizers confirmed that the festival has secured official recognition from the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy.
This landmark endorsement solidifies the festival’s status as a primary driver of Nigeria’s creative economy, bridging the gap between ancient Egba heritage and modern global enterprise.
The 2026 edition, themed as a “Creative Heritage Engine,” arrives with significant economic momentum, including a projected $2 million diaspora investment pipeline. Founded by Aare (Dr.) Lai Labode, the Egbaliganza platform serves as the contemporary “fruit” to the Lisabi “root,” aiming to elevate Africa’s culture and fashion valuation from $30 billion to a staggering $500 billion.
The upcoming festivities, scheduled for March 28, 2026, are expected to draw participants and delegations from over 50 nations, including Uganda, the Philippines, and Bangladesh, transforming Abeokuta into a temporary global capital for cultural exchange.
A centerpiece of this year’s celebration is the Irin Akinkoju, a formal ceremonial segment dedicated to honoring the “Heroes of Egbaland.” This initiative seeks to document and celebrate the sons and daughters of the soil whose exploits have shaped the Egba identity on national and continental stages.
By integrating the “Walk of Heroes” and “Walk of Kings” into the program, Egbaliganza ensures that the legacy of Lisabi Agbongboakala—the warrior-liberator who unified the Egba people—remains a living, breathing inspiration for the next generation of leaders and creators.
Innovation takes center stage through the Egba Fashion Club Runways and Hackathons, where indigenous textiles like Àdìrẹ and Aso-Oke will be repositioned for the international luxury market.
Other major highlights include the unveiling of the Alake-Egbaliganza Unity Drum, a performance by an 80-man orchestral band, and the “Oja Egbaliganza” exhibition. The latter will feature historic garments and artifacts estimated to be between 3,000 and 4,000 years old, offering a rare, “wearable” glimpse into ancient African history that challenges conventional academic timelines.
As the flagship program of the Lisabi Festival, Egbaliganza 2026 is being positioned as a “proof of concept” for the broader Afroliganza movement. Organizers emphasize that the festival is more than a series of events; it is a replicable infrastructure for African communities to monetize and preserve their identity. With the Gala Night, “Flame of a Continent,” set to cap off the celebrations, Egbaliganza remains a defiant and sophisticated declaration that Egba culture is not only a relic of the past but a viable, high-value engine for the future.
