Former Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun was on Saturday conferred with the award of the most distinguished alumnus of the African Church Grammar School, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Amosun, an old student of the Afrograms, was conferred with the award at the 70th anniversary of Afrograms, in recognition of his invaluable contributions to the social and academic development of the school.
Other old students including the Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC, in Osun State, Barrister Mutiu Agboke, Mr. Adewale Olutayo, Prince Abdulhakeem Ajasa, and Hon. Oyetunde Ojo, among others, also bagged distinguished alumnus awards.
At the event, old students from various clubsets converged on the school premises, to celebrate 70 years of existence of Afrograms, a citadel of learning renowned for academic standards.
Speaking after receiving the award, Amosun thanked the National Executive Council of the Afrograms Old Students Association, elders, past and present teachers and students, for sustaining the high standards of the school.
“Our beloved school, African Church Grammar School, ‘famous for high standards’ has delivered seven decades of academic excellence, dedication, and service to the community, Abeokuta, Ogun State and Nigeria – a testament to the school’s rich history and tradition.
“The African Church Grammar School has and continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the minds and futures of countless individuals, many of whom have become leaders and change-makers in their respective fields,” Amosun said.
The former Governor however stressed the need for old students to give back to their alma mater, adding that the provision of qualitative education should not be left in the hands of government alone.
He noted that old students are critical stakeholders in the education sector and called for more concerted and deliberate efforts to support the governments to develop the schools.
Amosun later commissioned some projects undertaken by the old students for the school including a football pitch, science laboratory, main gate among others.
