The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Ogun State Joint Campus Committee (JCC), has raised serious concerns over the growing wave of insecurity across tertiary institutions in the state, following recent incidents of robbery and kidnapping affecting students.
In a press statement signed by its Chairman, Comrade Olabode Faruq Success, the student body described as troubling reports of robbery at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ibogun Campus, and the kidnapping cases at Gateway Polytechnic, Sapade. The association also highlighted increasing fears among students of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) over similar security threats.
NANS Ogun JCC noted that the incidents have heightened anxiety within the student community, stressing that campuses must remain safe spaces for learning, growth, and development. “No student should have to pursue education under fear or uncertainty,” the statement read.
The association expressed solidarity with affected students and campus unions, emphasizing that the cases are not isolated but indicative of a broader security challenge requiring urgent intervention.
While acknowledging the swift response of the Nigeria Police Force under Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, particularly in the rescue of kidnapped students at Gateway Polytechnic, NANS stressed that more proactive measures are needed to curb future occurrences.
It called on security agencies to intensify surveillance, strengthen campus security frameworks, and collaborate closely with school authorities to ensure the safety of students across Ogun State.
The student body also urged students to remain vigilant and make use of the “Gateway Shield App” to promptly report suspicious activities, noting that collective responsibility is key to improving campus security.
Reaffirming its commitment to student welfare, NANS Ogun JCC declared that it will continue to speak up and advocate for safer learning environments, insisting that “security is not negotiable.”
The statement concluded with a call for united action among stakeholders to safeguard the future of students in the state.
