The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Ogun State Chapter, has issued a fresh seven-day ultimatum to the Ogun State Government, warning that it will embark on industrial action if its demands are not urgently addressed.
In a communiqué released at the end of its State Executive Council meeting held on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at the Union Secretariat, Agbeloba, Abeokuta, the union expressed deep frustration over what it described as the government’s continued silence on pressing issues affecting workers in the local government service.
The letter, addressed to the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, recalled previous correspondences dated January 21 and January 28, 2026, in which the union highlighted challenges “militating against the Local Government Service in Ogun State.” According to NULGE, the failure of the state government to respond meaningfully to its appeals has dampened morale and eroded trust among workers across the 20 local government councils.
Arising from deliberations at the meeting, the union resolved to issue another seven-day ultimatum, effective from Wednesday, February 18 to Thursday, February 26, 2026. NULGE warned that it would not hesitate to embark on industrial action should the government fail to meet its demands by the expiration of the deadline.
“The union will not hesitate to imbibe any industrial action if our demands are not met after the deadline of this new ultimatum,” the communiqué stated, signaling the possibility of a widespread shutdown of local government activities across the state.
Despite the strong warning, the union maintained a conciliatory tone, describing Governor Abiodun as a “listening and labour-friendly Governor” and expressing hope that he would intervene with utmost sincerity and urgency to avert an industrial dispute.
The leadership of NULGE in Ogun State, led by State President Comrade Adefesobi Adebayo and Organising Secretary Comrade Ganiyu Jelili, affirmed their readiness to engage the governor in dialogue to resolve the matter amicably.
Copies of the communiqué were also forwarded to key government officials and security agencies, including the Secretary to the State Government, the Head of Service, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, the Director of the State Security Service, the Commissioner of Police, and the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress.
With the clock now ticking, attention turns to the Ogun State Government as workers await a decisive response that could determine whether local government operations continue uninterrupted or grind to a halt in the coming days.
