The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Ogun State Branch, has called for the immediate removal and prosecution of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Ogundele Olorunwa, Area Commander of Zone 2, Abeokuta, over allegations of corruption, abuse of power, and disregard for the rule of law.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Comrade Fumbi Onifade, and Secretary, Comrade Ali Adesina, CDHR expressed outrage over a voice recording in which ACP Olorunwa allegedly admitted that petitions submitted to his office are only approved upon payment of money. The group described this as a “shocking display of systemic corruption” within the Nigeria Police Force.
The human rights body alleged that ACP Olorunwa routinely demanded between ₦100,000 and ₦200,000 from complainants before acting on petitions. Those who refused to comply reportedly had their cases abandoned. CDHR also accused him of flouting a subsisting court judgment in Suit No: AB/390/2025 by seizing property illegally and ordering the detention of an innocent citizen who challenged his actions.
While commending Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, for efforts in crime-fighting, CDHR warned that the credibility of the police must not be undermined by the “shameful practices” of senior officers. The group gave the Inspector General of Police, Dr. Adeolu Egbetokun, and the Police Service Commission a seven-day ultimatum to investigate, prosecute, and sanction ACP Olorunwa or risk being seen as condoning corruption.
CDHR further called on Amnesty International, the National Human Rights Commission, Civil Liberties Organization, and other advocacy groups to collaborate in documenting victims’ experiences and pushing for justice. The group also urged victims of ACP Olorunwa’s alleged corrupt practices to come forward and confidentially share their stories.
