ABEOKUTA — Former Governor of Ogun State and Senator who represented Ogun Central, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, CON, FCA, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of veteran journalist and media icon, Dr. Doyin Abiola, widow of the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

Dr. Abiola died on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at the age of 82.

In a condolence message issued on Wednesday, Senator Amosun described her demise as “a profound loss to the journalism profession, Ogun State, and Nigeria at large.”

“Dr. Doyin Abiola was a trailblazer and a consummate media professional who devoted her life to the advancement of journalism in Nigeria. At a time when academic attainment was an exclusive preserve—especially for women—she broke barriers by earning a doctorate in Communications and Politics, a testament to her brilliance and resilience,” Amosun said.

He recalled her pioneering journey in the media industry, noting that she served briefly on the editorial board of the Daily Times before joining the Concord Newspapers, where she made history as the first female Editor-in-Chief of a national daily in Nigeria.

“Her groundbreaking achievements opened doors for generations of women in journalism,” he added. “As Managing Director of the Concord Group, Dr. Abiola exemplified visionary leadership, integrity, and a deep commitment to objective, impactful journalism.”

Senator Amosun also highlighted her pivotal role during the political struggles of her late husband, Chief MKO Abiola, following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election.

“She stood by Chief Abiola through his political travails with courage and dignity. Her strength in the face of adversity was inspiring and admirable.”

While commiserating with the Abiola family, Senator Amosun offered prayers for the repose of Dr. Abiola’s soul.

“May Almighty Allah (SWT) grant her Aljannah Firdaus and give her family the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” he said.
