Former Deputy Governorship Candidate in Ogun State, Hon. Adekunle Akinlade, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) along with his loyalists.

Akinlade cited unresolved internal crises within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the reason for his defection, stating that the party is “dead” in the state.

In an interview with newsmen in Abeokuta, Akinlade said he is “back home” and ready to align with Governor Prince Dr. Dapo Abiodun and the APC.

He commended Abiodun’s administration for its achievements over the past six years, particularly praising the construction of the Owode-Idiroko road, which had been in disrepair for years.

Akinlade expressed his admiration for Abiodun’s leadership, saying, “Governor Dapo Abiodun has done well. He has a clear vision, and he is doing well.” He added that he is impressed by Abiodun’s achievements and is willing to support the governor’s agenda.

The former House of Representatives member stated that his decision to defect was not taken lightly but was necessary due to PDP’s internal problems. “It is clear that PDP cannot find its way back,” he said.

Akinlade revealed that he and his loyalists will meet with Governor Abiodun to formally declare their allegiance to the APC. He pledged to be loyal to Abiodun, saying, “We are going to align with Prince Dapo Abiodun and the party.”

When asked about his plans ahead of the 2027 Governorship election, Akinlade said he has no intention of contesting for any position. Instead, he will support whoever Abiodun wants as a successor.

Akinlade’s defection is seen as a significant boost to the APC in Ogun State, giv1en his influence and following. His decision to support Abiodun’s administration is expected to strengthen the governor’s position in the state.

The former PDP stalwart’s move to APC comes after he officially dumped the PDP on May 26, 2025, in a letter made available to journalists in Abeokuta. I
